Illinois Farm Bureau Young Leaders from around the state recently donated nearly $15,000 to food pantries statewide through the Harvest for All program.
Young Leaders made the mid-year contribution from funds raised through sales of collectible, scale-model semi-trucks featuring the IFB and Harvest for All logos and from prize money awarded to IFB Young Leaders from the American Farm Bureau Federation.
Illinois last year was first nationwide in total dollars donated to Harvest for All ($92,112) and placed second in volunteer hours (1,854). IFB Young Leaders, FFA members, and other volunteers in Illinois last year collected a total of 359,702 pounds of food that was donated to Harvest for All.
“The overall goal is for this money to stay in Illinois,” Jennifer Smith, IFB Young Leader manager, said of the recent donations that were distributed by YL representatives in all 18 districts of the state. “It’s helping local communities.”
Some YL representatives used the money to buy food for their local pantries while others donated the money directly to food pantries.
Hunger isn’t a concern limited to other countries or large metropolitan areas of the U.S. About 11 percent of Illinois households reportedly face food insecurity.
Meanwhile, food pantries in the state also are key resources for families during natural disasters, such as in the aftermath from the outbreak of tornadoes that wreaked havoc in Central Illinois and during flooding that inundated parts of Northern Illinois earlier this summer, Smith noted.
IFB Young Leaders last year sold out all the collectible trucks (350) that featured a grain trailer. Young Leaders this year reserved 250 trucks that will be sold as the second line in the series. This year’s truck features an anhydrous ammonia tank with the IFB and Harvest for All logos.
Each truck sells for $60, with all proceeds going to Harvest for All. Contact Jennifer Smith by email at jsmith@ilfb.org or phone 309-557-2536 for more details or to order one of the newest collectible trucks and to “Help Drive out Hunger.”
Smith also noted the deadline for counties to submit Harvest for All numbers for the year is the end of this month.
