At the halfway mark in October, the bean head is tucked in the back of the shed and corn is flying out of the fields. The ground is firm, moisture is in the 17% to 19% range and yields are mostly on the pleasant side of really nice. I hit my steepest sloped hills. The co-op is following up with fertilizer spiked with 40 pounds of cereal rye. We’ll follow up with vertical tillage. We had 1/3 of an inch of rain last week. The timing was just about perfect for the wheat we put down the previous Friday.
