Last week was a humbling week. The county received widespread hail Saturday night. The worst from what I had seen was just south of Sidney. Multiple beanfields were defoliated to only 20% of the leaves left. Corn was shredded to the point that none of the leaves on the VT stage corn has an upright leaf. Corn even has stalks broken off from the hail. Thankfully, we received .4 of an inch of rain Wednesday night to help some of the hail-damaged crops. The worst of the fields are turning yellow, so we will see what happens in the next few weeks. Fungicide application on corn started during the week. Late-planted and replanted corn is just now about waist-high. Nearly all soybeans are flowering or setting pods.
