Work on the statewide Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy (NLRS) will be featured Nov. 10 during an online conference. The registration deadline is Nov. 8.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) recently released the third biennial NLRS report. Overall, Illinois seeks to lower all nitrogen and phosphorus moving into water by 45% compared to average 1980-96 levels.

Robert Bonnie, USDA deputy chief of staff for policy and senior adviser for climate, will give the keynote address, following opening remarks by Illinois Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II.

IEPA Director John Kim will give remarks before a lunch break.

An agriculture sector overview will be provided by Michael Woods, manager of IDOA’s natural resources division. Trevor Sample, IEPA’s NLRS coordinator, will present a point sector overview.

Lauren Lurkins, Illinois Farm Bureau director of environmental policy, will give attendees a Farm Bureau update in the afternoon.

Topics to be discussed will include an Illinois River phosphorous study and Rock River nitrate study, an inventory of statewide green infrastructure and Illinois agriculture’s investment in nutrient research.
