Ted’s Greenhouse Inc. in Cook County offers everything for growing plants from a vast variety, including unique ones, to special soil to custom growing containers for all seasons.

Cook County Farm Bureau Director Dan Biernacki and his wife, Karen, own and operate a 100,000-square-foot greenhouse and 2 acres of growing fields, located at 16930 84th Ave., Tinley Park. The business was founded by Dan’s father, the late Ted Biernacki, who passed away Jan. 16.

The business is open to the public year-round 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. From April 1 through July 15, Sunday business hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ted’s Greenhouse is known for its wide variety of annuals, perennials, biennials, herbs, cacti, succulents, vegetables and specialty stock. Within the types of plants, the varieties are abundant. “We have hundreds of tomato (varieties) and 200 varieties of herbs,” Biernacki noted.

Those varieties come from around the world. On March 17, Biernacki received a shipment of plant cuttings from Israel. He explained 15,000 tiny cuttings can fit in a container the size of a shoe box. They will be planted in trays and rooted in the greenhouse.

Lovers of spring flowers will find Easter lilies, tulips, daffodils, azaleas, hydrangeas, pansies and spring plants that do well in cold weather.

Biernacki is proud the greenhouse offers customers “plants that are successful around here (the Chicago area).”

Customized containers of mixed plants are popular and a special service for customers large and small. Customers can bring in their containers and specify certain plants, a theme or even predominant colors, and staff will design, plant and grow the container. Those needing ideas will find knowledgeable staff ready to help.

Ted’s Greenhouse designs and grows custom containers for individual customers as well as businesses, municipalities and other customers seeking multiple containers. Containers are adaptable as seasons change.

Given their specialty plants, it’s no surprise that Ted’s Greenhouse also produces and sells customized soils. “We’re known for our soil,” Biernacki said. Soil is sold by the gallon, bushel and in 1- and 2-yard containers.

In addition to in-person purchases at the greenhouse, orders are accepted by email, fax and phone. Masks and social distancing are currently required. For information, call the office at 708-532-3575 or email info@tedsgreenhouse.com.

Ted’s Greenhouse has special Farm Bureau offers and a membership offer for nonmembers. Cook County Farm Bureau members save 10% on their total purchase each time they shop. For nonmembers who make a $200 purchase, pay by check and complete a Farm Bureau membership form, Ted's Greenhouse will pay for the first year of membership. The 10% discount does not apply to sign-up purchase.

Editor’s note: Cultivating Our Communities returns for a second season. The agriculture diversity campaign is a collaboration by Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, Illinois Farm Bureau and the Illinois Specialty Growers Association to inform consumers statewide about the farmers and businesses that grow, raise, process and sell diverse farm products in their state.
